Description
epa01675654 Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir waves to government officials and media as he boards a plane to travel to Egypt where he is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, in Khartoum, Sudan, 25 March 2009. There is concern among Sudanese authorities that Al Bashir's plane could be forced down if he travels outside of Sudanese airspace because of the ICC arrest warrant against him. Al Bashir is scheduled to travel to the Arab League Summit later this month and Bashir has vowed that he will attend even though an International Criminal Courts arrest warrant has been issued against indicting him for crime against humanity that include murder, rape and torture.
25 March's visit will be al-Bashir's second trip abroad since the arrest warrant was issued, after his brief visit to Eritrea on 23 March. Neither Qatar nor Eritrea, like Sudan, have signed up to the ICC and have no obligation to arrest al-Bashir. Egypt is a member of the 22-nation Arab League, which said it will take no action over the arrest warrant. EPA/PHILIP DHIL
