Description
This is the female panda cub born to giant panda 'Rohin,' who gave birth to a male and female panda cub in the Adventure World mini-zoo near Osaka. The first cub was a female born at 5:35 a.m, weighing 194 grams and the second was a male born at 6:49 a.m, weighing 116 grams, according to a spokesman for the zoo. The cubs are the first for their 8-year-old mother, who was herself born at the zoo in 2000. The twins are also the first ever to be born in Japan to a Japanese-born panda. There are only 1,590 pandas left in the wild but scientists hope to boost their numbers through their captive breeding project. The giant panda is an endangered species and highly threatened. China has by far the most pandas with 239 giant pandas in captivity and another 27 pandas living outside the country. It is also estimated that around 1,590 pandas are currently living in the wild.
Pictured: Panda Cub
Ref: SPL49990 150908

Splash News and Pictures
Los Angeles: 310-821-2666
New York: 212-619-2666
London: 870-934-2666
photodesk@splashnews.com
