The clashes started when members of the PLC and their leader Eduardo Montealegre tried travel across Mateare Town and to get to Leon City, 90 kilometers northwest of Managua, to participate in a demonstration claiming victory for the PLC in the mayoral Election held November 9, 2008 against the declaration of the Supreme Electoral Council, which named the FSLN as victor.
